Usage Note
Nord is uninflected — it has no feminine or plural form, and the final d is always silent. Unlike compass points in English, French does not capitalise nord when used adjectivally ('le vent du nord'). Le Nord as a capitalised noun refers to the Nord département in France, famous for its mining heritage and ch'ti dialect.
