Usage Note

Maudit (feminine maudite) is the past participle of the old verb maudire ('to curse') used as an adjective. It can be a mild expletive placed before a noun — ce maudit appareil! ('this damned device!'). In Quebec French it is especially frequent as a general intensifier. The formal literary counterpart is damné.
