Usage Note

Master in French education refers to the two-year post-licence graduate degree (equivalent to a master's degree), split into master 1 and master 2. It replaced the old maîtrise and DEA/DESS under the Bologna Process (LMD reform). In audio/film production, le master is the original master recording or file from which copies are made.
