Usage Note

Maraudeur refers to someone who sneaks around to steal or plunder, historically used of soldiers looting after battle. Today it is also used of opportunistic thieves or, in ecology, of animals that raid crops or bins. The verb marauder means 'to maraud' or 'to prowl', and la maraude is the act of scrounging or pilfering. The feminine form is maraudeuse.
