Usage Note

Manipuler means both to physically handle an object (manipuler des produits chimiques, to handle chemicals) and to psychologically manipulate someone. The negative connotation is strong when applied to people. The noun manipulation and the adjective manipulateur (manipulative) are common in both senses.
