Usage Note

Méfier is almost always used reflexively: se méfier de means 'to be wary of / to distrust.' Méfie-toi! is a common warning meaning 'Watch out!' or 'Be careful!' The noun méfiance means 'distrust, mistrust,' and the adjective méfiant means 'suspicious.'
