Usage Note
Médecin is the formal title for a medical doctor; in conversation, French speakers often shorten it to le médecin or use le docteur. Historically, médecin had no official feminine form, but la médecin and la médecine (the science) are both in common use today. Calling someone Docteur is also standard in direct address.
