Loin is used in the fixed expression de loin (by far, from afar) and au loin (in the distance). It pairs with près (near): ni trop loin, ni trop près (neither too far nor too close). The phrase loin des yeux, loin du coeur is the French equivalent of 'out of sight, out of mind.'
