location
Usage Note
Lieu appears in many fixed phrases: au lieu de (instead of) is one of the most common preposition phrases in French, and avoir lieu (to take place) is indispensable for describing events. The plural is lieux, and les lieux can mean 'the premises' in legal or formal contexts. Un lieu commun literally means 'a common place' but idiomatically means a cliché.
Examples
"La réunion a lieu demain matin."
Natural Translation
The meeting takes place tomorrow morning.
Literal Translation
The meeting has place tomorrow morning.
