lard

bacon, lard

noun LAR Rare

Usage Note

Lard in French refers to pork fat used in cooking — both the cured streaky bacon (lard fumé) and the pure rendered fat. The final -d is silent. Unlike English 'lard' (pure rendered fat), French lard more often means streaky bacon; lardon (the diminutive, usually plural lardons) are the small bacon cubes ubiquitous in French cooking (salads, quiches, tartiflette).

Examples

"Elle fait revenir les lardons dans la poêle."

Natural Translation

She is frying the bacon pieces in the pan.

Literal Translation

She makes the lardons come back in the pan.
