hérésie

heresy

noun eh-reh-ZEE Rare

Origin: Greek hairesis (a choosing, a sect)

Usage Note

Hérésie originally denoted a religious belief condemned by the Church, but it is now widely used in secular contexts to mean any strongly held view that departs from orthodoxy — c'est une hérésie de mettre de la crème dans la carbonara. The person who holds a heresy is an hérétique (heretic), both noun and adjective.
