huer

to boo, to hoot at

verb ew-EH Rare

Origin: From Old French 'huer', imitative of the cry 'hou'.

Usage Note

Huer means to boo or jeer a performer or speaker; the crowd subject is usually collective: la foule le hua (the crowd booed him). The noun huée (f) means 'booing' or 'jeers'. Note the h is aspirate, so no liaison or elision: les huées but never les z-huées.

Examples

"Le public a hué l'acteur sur scène."

Natural Translation

The audience booed the actor on stage.
