Usage Note
Haïr is one of the most irregular verbs in French: the diaeresis (tréma) on the ï appears in most forms to prevent the ha- from being treated as an aspirate h. Unlike most verbs, the singular present tense drops the tréma (je hais, tu hais, il hait) but keeps it in the plural (nous haïssons). The related noun is la haine (hatred).
