Gorge covers both the anatomical throat (avoir mal à la gorge = 'to have a sore throat') and a narrow mountain valley. The expression rire à gorge déployée means 'to laugh heartily' (literally 'with open throat'). The feminine noun gorgee (a sip or gulp) is a close relative.
