Geler is used both literally (l'eau gèle à zéro degré) and figuratively (geler les salaires, 'to freeze wages'). It is an impersonal weather verb: il gèle means 'it's freezing'. The noun gel means frost or gel, and gelée means jelly or a hard frost.
