furieux

furious, enraged

adjective foo-ree-UH Less Common

Origin: Latin furiosus (full of rage), from furia (fury)

Usage Note

Furieux is an -eux adjective, so the feminine form is furieuse. It is stronger than en colère (angry) and implies barely controlled rage. The expression furieux contre quelqu'un (furious with someone) takes contre, not de or avec. The noun fureur (fury, rage) is a close relative.

Examples

"Il était furieux d'apprendre la nouvelle."

Natural Translation

He was furious to learn the news.
