Usage Note
Filou describes a crafty, dishonest person — a cheat or petty swindler — but often with a note of affectionate exasperation, especially when applied to a child. The feminine filoute exists but is far less common. The adjective filou is also used informally to mean 'sneaky' or 'crafty'. Related verb: filouter (to swindle).
