fameux

famous, renowned

adjective fah-MUH Less Common

Also means

excellent, first-rate (ironic)

Usage Note

Fameux often carries irony in spoken French: c'est fameux can mean 'it's excellent' but just as often 'that's a fine mess.' The feminine form is fameuse. It differs from célèbre (famous/celebrated) in that fameux can imply notoriety or sarcasm — le fameux problème ('that notorious problem').

Examples

"C'est le fameux restaurant dont tu parlais."

Natural Translation

That is the famous restaurant you were talking about.
