Fameux often carries irony in spoken French: c'est fameux can mean 'it's excellent' but just as often 'that's a fine mess.' The feminine form is fameuse. It differs from célèbre (famous/celebrated) in that fameux can imply notoriety or sarcasm — le fameux problème ('that notorious problem').
