Usage Note
Est (pronounced like the verb est — 'is') means 'east' as a direction or region. To avoid confusion with est (third-person singular of être), context and capitalization help: l'Est capitalized often refers to Eastern Europe or Eastern France. The four cardinal points in French are nord, sud, est, ouest.
Examples
"Le soleil se lève à l'est."
Natural Translation
The sun rises in the east.
Literal Translation
The-sun-oneself-raises in-the-east
