Usage Note
Escudo refers to the former currency of Portugal (and historically of several Portuguese-speaking countries), replaced by the euro in 2002. It is still used for Cape Verde (escudo cap-verdien) and some other territories. The word derives from the Portuguese/Spanish for 'shield'.
