encoder

to encode; to code

verb ahn-koh-DEH Rare

Origin: French en- + code.

Usage Note

Encoder means to convert information into a coded format, used in computing, linguistics, and communications. Encoder des données is the standard IT phrase for encoding data. The reverse process is décoder. In Belgian French, encoder is also widely used informally to mean 'to input data' or 'to type into a form', a usage not common in France.

"Il faut encoder les données avant de les transmettre."

Natural Translation

The data must be encoded before transmission.
