Usage Note

Discuter can mean to discuss something calmly (discuter d'un projet) or, in familiar speech, to argue or dispute (ils ont discuté toute la nuit). It takes de before the topic: discuter de politique ('to discuss politics'). The noun discussion covers both a conversation and a disagreement.
