Complication is used in everyday speech (il y a eu des complications = 'there were complications') as well as in medical contexts (une complication post-opératoire). The verb compliquer means 'to complicate,' and the reflexive se compliquer means 'to get complicated.' Complications in the plural is especially common when describing unforeseen problems.
