Usage Note

Complaisance can mean complacent self-satisfaction, or a readiness to oblige and please others — the latter sense, now somewhat old-fashioned, is positive. The adjective is complaisant ('accommodating, indulgent'). A certificat de complaisance is a document issued as a favour to someone not entitled to it.
