Usage Note
Communal describes something belonging to or administered by a commune (the basic French administrative unit, equivalent to a municipality). Un chemin communal is a public path maintained by the commune. The masculine plural is communaux, following the standard -al/-aux pattern. It should not be confused with English 'communal' meaning shared by a group, which in French is better rendered as commun or collectif.
