cocher

coachman

noun koh-SHEH Rare

Usage Note

Cocher historically referred to the driver of a horse-drawn carriage. The word survives primarily in historical texts, fairy tales (le cocher de Cendrillon — Cinderella's coachman), and idiomatic expressions. It should not be confused with the verb cocher (to tick/check off a box), which is a different word.

Examples

"Le cocher fouettait les chevaux pour avancer."

Natural Translation

The coachman whipped the horses to move forward.
