Usage Note

Chiche as an adjective means miserly or ungenerous — il est chiche de compliments ('he is sparing with compliments'). As an interjection — Chiche ! — it is a dare or challenge equivalent to 'I dare you!' or 'Go on then!'. The two senses are unrelated etymologically. The plural pois chiches ('chickpeas') is a distinct homophone compound.
