Usage Note

Champagne (masculine) refers both to the sparkling wine and to the Champagne region of northeast France where it originates. Only sparkling wine made in that region under strict rules may legally carry the name; other French sparkling wines are called crémant. The phrase une coupe de champagne means 'a glass of champagne'.
