chambrer

to tease, to rib

verb shahm-BREH Rare

Also means

to bring wine to room temperature

Usage Note

Chambrer has two quite distinct meanings. In wine culture it means to slowly bring a red wine from cellar temperature to room temperature — the noun chambre (room) is at the root. In everyday colloquial speech it means to mock or tease someone in a good-natured way: arrête de me chambrer ('stop taking the mickey'). The tease sense is informal and common among friends.

Examples

"Ses collègues l'ont chambré toute la journée."

Natural Translation

His colleagues teased him all day.
