Usage Note
Bu is the past participle of boire (to drink), so it appears in compound tenses: il a bu trop de vin. Used as an adjective with être it is colloquial for 'intoxicated' (il est complètement bu). For that sense the familiar bourré is more common, while ivre is the formal word.
Examples
"Il était complètement bu hier soir."
Natural Translation
He was completely drunk last night.
