bonjour

hello

noun bon-ZHOOR Common

Also means

good morning

Usage Note

Bonjour literally fuses bon and jour (good day) and is the default greeting until evening, when it yields to bonsoir. Skipping it before a request strikes the French as rude, so a shopkeeper may pointedly say bonjour first to remind you.

Examples

"Bonjour, comment allez-vous ?"

Natural Translation

Hello, how are you?

Literal Translation

Hello, how go-you
