blanchisserie

laundry, laundromat

noun blahn-shee-suh-REE Rare

Origin: From 'blanchisseur/se' (launderer) + '-ie'; 'blanchir' from 'blanc' (white).

Usage Note

Blanchisserie refers both to a commercial laundry facility and to the laundry trade. A self-service coin laundry is usually called a laverie automatique; a full-service commercial one is a blanchisserie. The person who works there is a blanchisseur (m) or blanchisseuse (f) — a historically common occupation depicted in Impressionist paintings.

Examples

"J'ai déposé mes chemises à la blanchisserie."

Natural Translation

I dropped off my shirts at the laundry.
