bidonner

to crack up laughing, to have a laugh

verb bee-do-NAY Rare

Origin: from bidon 'fake, phoney' (originally 'can, jerry can')

Also means

to fake, to fabricate (something)

Usage Note

Bidonner is familiar/slang; se bidonner (reflexive) means to laugh uproariously — on s'est bidonné toute la soirée (we cracked up all evening). The non-reflexive sense 'to fake' (bidonner les chiffres) is also slangy. Both senses derive from bidon in its slang sense of something hollow or fake.

Examples

"On s'est bidonné pendant tout le spectacle."

Natural Translation

We cracked up laughing throughout the show.

Literal Translation

one-self cracked-up during all the show
