Usage Note
Beauf is short for beau-frère (brother-in-law) in colloquial speech, but it more commonly means a narrow-minded, vulgar, stereotypically provincial French man. The sense was popularised by Cabu's cartoon character le Beauf in the 1970s. It is pejorative and widely understood.
Examples
"Il fait des blagues de beauf au bureau."
