Usage Note

Barrer means to obstruct a passage (barrer la route = to block the road) or to cross out text (barrer un mot = to cross out a word). The reflexive se barrer is slang for 'to get out, to leave' (barre-toi! = get lost!). A barrière (barrier) shares the root.
