Usage Note

Balise originally means a navigational beacon or buoy marking a hazard or channel. In modern usage, it has been extended to computing and web development (une balise HTML = an HTML tag). Road workers also use des balises for traffic cones and markers. The verb baliser means to mark out a route or to feel anxious (informal).
