autant

as much, so much

adverb oh-TAHN Common

Usage Note

Autant expresses equivalence or quantity and appears in several fixed structures: autant que (as much as), d'autant plus (all the more), and pour autant (even so, for all that). Unlike tant, it typically compares two quantities rather than expressing sheer degree. Autant can also introduce a pragmatic concession, as in autant dire ('you might as well say').

Examples

"Il travaille autant que moi."

Natural Translation

He works as much as I do.

Literal Translation

He works as-much as me
