ancre

anchor

noun AHN-kr Rare

Origin: Latin 'ancora'

Usage Note

Ancre is feminine and refers to the ship's anchor. It should not be confused with encre (ink), which sounds identical. The expression jeter l'ancre ('to drop anchor') is also used figuratively to mean settling somewhere permanently. Lever l'ancre means 'to weigh anchor' or, informally, 'to leave'.

Examples

"Le navire jette l'ancre dans la baie."

Natural Translation

The ship drops anchor in the bay.
