affilé

sharp, keen

adjective ah-fee-LEH Rare

Usage Note

Affilé literally means 'honed like a blade' and almost always appears in the fixed phrase d'affilée (meaning 'in a row, without stopping'), e.g. trois heures d'affilée. As a standalone adjective describing a sharp edge it is quite literary. The verb affiler means 'to sharpen'.

Examples

"Une lame bien affilée coupe facilement."

Natural Translation

A well-sharpened blade cuts easily.
